Sexual Health & Contraception FAQ's

The contraceptive implant is a small plastic rod that is inserted under the skin on the inner aspect of the upper arm. It contains the hormone progesterone and works by thickening cervical mucus and can stop ovulation. It is a very effective form of contraception (approximate 99% effective). The implant lasts for three years at which point it can be replaced if desired. Once removed fertility returns quickly.

Having a coil fitted involves:

• A consultation with a Consultant Gynaecologist
• Full history taking and pelvic examination
• Blood pressure assessment
• Contraception review
• Coil fitting (range of coils available including hormonal and non-hormonal)
• Removal of existing coil (+ £105 if required)
• Detailed written report emailed or posted to you and your GP
• Prescription arrangement
• Direct access for any urgent health concerns

Having a coil removed involves:

• A consultation with consultant gynaecologist
• Full history taking and pelvic examination
• Blood pressure assessment
• Contraception review
• Coil removal
• Detailed written report emailed or posted to you and your GP
• Prescription arrangement
• Direct access for any urgent health concerns

Please note that if you are intending on having a coil removed you should either avoid sex or use use additional protection for the 7 days prior to date of removal.

• Two cyrotherapy treatments within an 8 week period
• Comprehensive report to you and your GP
• Direct access for any urgent health concerns

The first cryotherapy procedure would take place during your first appointment, if a second treatment is needed within the 8 week period a further 15minute appointment can be booked.

• Abdominal and pelvic examination including
  • Test for 7 sexually transmitted diseases
• Blood tests including
  • HIV, Hepatitis B & C and Syphilis
• Direct access for any urgent health concerns

The following tests can be added to a sexual health check at an additional cost:

• Cervical smear & HPV sub typing test
• HVS (high vaginal swab) for use in symptomatic patients only
• Herpes swab test by PCR
