What is an early anomaly scan?

This is an ultrasound scan during which the anatomy of the baby is examined. Measurements are taken to ensure baby is growing normally within the womb and position of placenta is noted. It can be performed at 15 weeks+0 days -18 weeks+6 days, ideal gestation 16+ weeks.

What does it test for?

It is aimed at confirming the normal development of the baby and to identify structural abnormalities such as spina bifida, heart abnormalities or cleft lip/palate. It also determines markers for chromosomal abnormalities (i.e. Down Syndrome).

What is a routine anomaly scan

This is a detailed ultrasound scan during which each part of the fetal anatomy is examined. Special attention is paid to the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys and limbs. If any abnormalities are detected this will be discussed with the client. The scan can be performed at 18 weeks+0days – 21 weeks+6 days, ideal gestation 20 – 21 weeks+6 days.
